Program Description

This one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program provides professionals with specialized knowledge and skills in victimology and victim services to help them understand and address the needs of victims/survivors of crime. Students develop an understanding of victims’ rights, traumatic loss, and the impact of crime and victimization on victims in the criminal justice system. The program will explore the history and theories of victimization with a trauma-informed and victim-centered approach. Courses focus on issues such as childhood abuse, intimate partner violence and sexual assault while including equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) principles. The program prepares graduates to advocate for victims; collaborate with victim service agencies; assess and refer victims to appropriate services; and contribute to risk assessment for individuals, families and communities. A capstone project provides practical experience in planning, delivering and evaluating victim services and advocacy.
