Program Description
The BA (Hons) Drama and Performance program at the University of Portsmouth aims to harness students' passion for performance while developing critical understanding and practical skills in the field of drama. Incorporating both practical and theoretical study, the course explores the full spectrum of dramatic arts, including drama, theatre, and performance studies. Students learn to critically engage with textual readings, historical contexts, and theoretical frameworks of drama, theatre, and performance. They also acquire practical skills in acting, directing, scriptwriting, and technical theatre, working individually and as part of an ensemble. In the latter years of the course, students have the chance to specialize and explore their specific areas of interest through performance projects and a final-year dissertation. They also gain valuable professional experience through the program's strong links with local cultural and arts organizations, preparing them for diverse careers in the arts and creative industries. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to critically reflect on their learning and experiential knowledge, developing not only as performers but as independent, innovative, and creative thinkers.
